Behold

2 Corinthians 3:18 “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the LORD, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the LORD who is Spirit.”

We become what we behold. But what does it mean to “behold”?

Behold = Look! Listen! Linger!

  • Look in the book. Let God’s word be a mirror in your life (cf James 1:23-25).
  • Otherwise, we’re like the person who looks in a mirror and forgets what they look like, and we keep returning to the mirror. That’s vanity, and it’s empty. We shouldn’t read the Bible to get what we want out of life, rather we read to see what God wants for our life.

  • Listen to the Spirit. The one voice that gives us identity is God (cf Ro 8:15-17).There are lots of voices in our life telling us we don’t belong, or attempting to change our identity. But it’s important to listen to the Holy Spirit, whom reminds us we belong to our Heavenly Father.

  • Linger in glory. Realize you were made forever, and resurrection life is now. So, the Christian has endless hope in every situation (cf Rev 21:3-7). Eternity-amnesia means we get stress, anxiety, and fear. But lingering in glory puts our problems in perspective. It helps us to remember that God is on the throne and nothing is too big for Him. When we linger in our heavenly home, we become more grateful and joyful.

    “Aim at heaven and you’ll get earth thrown in. Aim at earth, and you’ll get neither.” C.S. Lewis
