More Light, Less Heat

It’s far easier to identify problems or errors than solve them. Contrary attitudes and combative arguments are signs of hubris not helpfulness. It’s hard to love and reach people that you are incessantly shouting at and unevenly singling out. Our world needs more light than heat by showing charity, speaking gently, and steering people to Jesus.

Show charity. The spirit of the flesh is one of distrust and derision. Yet, the Spirit of God is one of faith, hope, and love. We are to honor others made in the image of God, not assume the worst about them. “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3)

Speak gently. The spirit of the flesh is arrogant, slanderous, abusive, and having the appearance of godliness. Yet, the Spirit of Jesus is meek, strength under control, and being a peacemaker. “A soft word turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1).

Steer to Jesus. The spirit of the world is condemnation and cancel culture. Yet, the Spirit of God is compassionate, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. Rather than having the goal of setting people straight, we should seek to steer people to Jesus. Jesus makes people righteous, not us. Therefore, our words and witness must be flavored with salt and grace. “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” (Colossians 4:5-6)
