“Why are you sleeping?”
Luke 22:46
Jesus asks us questions.
Questions > Accusations.
At first this verse sounds accusatory. And indeed, Jesus is correct in assessing the drowsiness of the disciples. Yet, Jesus wants His disciples to self-evaluate and discern how to respond in dependence and depth of relationship with the Father. In His garden prayer, Jesus is modeling how to breath and be in God’s presence even when we’re most burdened.

God is the vine and apart from Jesus there is no salvation, joyful life, or sustaining resilience. So, Jesus invites us to breathe, even if we’re sleeping. Every breath utters our reliance upon God. Inhale the gracious promises of God, and exhale the tension and trials of life. God hears every prayer and helps us to keep breathing. Even our last breath on earth becomes a next one in His presence.
Breathe.
Pray.
The Lord is with you.
