The Gospels show us the point of the crucifixion is not just sympathy for how horrific Jesus died. Nor is the point having regret over some bad choices or feeling sorrow and shame. Instead, the cross was meant for transformation. Cross-bearing truly changes you because God’s grace works from the inside-out. Christian discipleship calls us to be crucified with Christ, daily dying to self, and living surrendered to God. It’s unselfish living, unreserved vulnerability and humility, and unyielding obedience to God’s commands – even the ones that make us uncomfortable.
So, if a person remains unchanged by faith in Jesus, they likely are not following Jesus. In todays world, it’s becoming easier to spot the difference of fans of Jesus from His followers. O Lord, change our heart by rooting our faith in your unchanging truth.
